All I Want For Christmas Is A Passport!
Image
You might need a passport with new rules.
Americans’ must-have for this year’s holiday season is not a pair of shoes or fur-lined coat — it’s a passport.

U.S. citizens will be required to have a passport, Air NEXUS card or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document for air travel to Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda by Jan. 8, 2007.

The new regulations are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative through the Departments of State and Homeland Security.

However, land or sea trips across the U.S. border and nearby areas previously required just a copy of a birth certificate, but passports or other documents determined by the Departments of State and Homeland Security are anticipated to be required by U.S. citizens by Jan. 1, 2008.

Thailand
“You want massage?” the smiling lady with the husky hands asked me for the fifth time that day on the beach. My fear of staggering off the beach, dripping in sarongs and pineapple juice, while the hawkers hi-fived each other, wasn’t proving rational. The sun was setting over the water, the price was certainly right (maybe $2), and after all I was on a beach in Thailand. Image

Earthquake Has Little Effect On Tourism
Image
Locations of earthquakes since 1868.
Hawaii's strongest earthquake in two decades had little impact on tourism, though Big Island Mayor Harry Kim estimated that as many as 3,000 people were evacuated from three hotels in the big island. Some evacuees were taken to a gymnasium.

The impact on tourism was limited in part because this is the low season. Airports continued to operate after the weekend quake though some flights were cancelled.

Most hotels returned almost immediately to regular operations.

The 6.6 magnitude quake caused some blackouts and landslides, but there were no reports of fatalities. Big Island officials said a survey of emergency rooms showed 25 people suffered minor injuries.
