Travel News

It sounds tempting. You’ve been invited to a seminar that promises a free vacation for listening to a presentation on discount travel services. The enticement is that you can become a "travel agent" with "credentials" that will permit you to travel at free or reduced fares.

Can the right ID card convince airlines, hotels and other travel services to give you a discount?

The Mountain States Better Business Bureau and the American Society of Travel Agents warn consumers not to be misled by travel card "mills" and other questionable discount travel service operations. The travel industry has become more vigilant in clamping down on those using card mill credentials.  Furthermore, promises of "industry insider" travel discounts do not always materialize. Some of the advertised prices are available to all travelers, and some hotels and airlines will not honor the card when presented for a discount or upgrade.

A Beautiful Sousa Beach
Sousa Dominican Republic: We arrived at the Puerto Plata on Saturday and were met by a taxi driver that was recommended by a friend of ours who visited the DR a few months ago.  Orlando was wonderful – he helped us find where to shop for groceries, the best beaches, places to go out in Cabarete and Sosua, restaurants and everything!  We speak broken Spanish so that was a great help.

Highlights of our Trip

Day 1

Image
The pool at The Palms
We arrived at The Palms and the young lady that rented us an apartment for the week, met us at the pool – she introduced us to our first tropical drink – chocolate rum!  Highlight of day 1 was definitely the chocolate rum at the pool side.

Day 2

Exploring!

Sosua Beach is an incredible experience!  Lots of little vendors selling hatian art and trinkets.  Highlight of day 2 was strolling down the beach window shopping, then stopping at one of the little beach bars for a nice lunch and a swim in the Caribbean ocean in the afternoon.

Day 3

Dinner in Cabarete – we went to Casa Nova and had an excellent dinner.  Cabarete beach is different to Sosua beach – more restaurants and less vendors, although they do have beach vendors walking around with necklaces and bracelets that you can buy.   Dinner was tasty and very reasonably priced.

Day 4

Locals!  We went in to a part of Sosua, known as Charamicos for a walk … the locals are great – everyone is so friendly.  We stopped at a small restaurant on the main street and had fresh fruit juice and a ‘Dominican Lunch’.  Heaps of Chicken, rice cooked with beans and salad!  This was the best part of our trip … everyone was trying to communicate with us, trying out their broken English and us talking our broken Spanish!

Day 5

Day of rest – Orland (our taxi driver) took us to a small quiet beach this morning, right below the hotel Waterfront in Sosua.  We had lunch at the Waterfront Restaurant which was excellent … even rinsed the sea water off in their pool!

Day 6

Time to go home.  We left some used clothes for the maid at the Palms, when we gave them to her she was so happy – such small things make these people so happy.  This was THE BEST vacation I have ever had and we’ve already decided on dates for next years trip!

Other Restaurants tried and liked:

 Lax in Cabarete

Café Cito in Puerto Plata

Rocky’s in Sosua

Review submitted by Amy L.: a TuesdaysTravler reader from South Africa.  Amy has been a traveler for going on 15 years and is thouroughly enjoying discovering the world! She'll be concentrating on the Caribbean for a few more years -she says this of her Domican Republic experience- "I've been to a few of the islands already but none has captured my interest like the DR has."
